Open Enrollment is your chance to make sure your health coverage still fits your life. Here are five steps to help you make the most of it:
1. Review your current plan.
Think about how your plan worked for you this past year. Were you happy with your coverage, costs, and provider options? If not, a different plan might be a better fit. Even if you plan to stick with your current carrier, check for changes to your deductible, copays, coinsurance, or network. Some plans renew with new benefits or different Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), which can affect your prescription costs. Confirm that your doctors and medications will still be covered before you re-enroll.
2. Consider your ongoing health needs.
If you expect major life or health changes—like a new baby, surgery, or new prescriptions—factor those into your decision. A plan that worked this year might not be the best fit for what’s ahead.
3. Check your provider network.
Make sure your current doctors will still be “in-network” next year. Don’t assume. They may only participate in certain plan types (HMO or PPO). Use your health plan’s online provider directory or call your provider’s office to confirm. California’s new Assembly Bill 280 is pushing health plans to keep provider lists more accurate, but it’s still best to double-check yourself.
4. Look at your potential costs.
Compare what you spent this year—on premiums, deductibles, copays, and coinsurance—to what you might pay under next year’s plan. If your costs are changing, consider adjusting your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) contributions. Planning ahead can help you avoid surprises later.
5. Finalize your enrollment on time.
Complete your enrollment forms (paper or online) before your employer’s deadline. Once submitted, confirm your selections were received and processed. Keep an eye out for your new member ID cards and provider info. Be sure to follow up with HR or Customer Service if they don’t arrive before your plan year starts.
